About Ruth Hyndman

I am Ruth Hyndman and I am an Interior Architecture and Design Professional.

Although I personally tend toward contemporary design, my tastes are eclectic. My favorite interiors combine contemporary with traditional; if the house is modern, perhaps pepper in some antiques; if the home boasts beautiful traditional details, experiment with contemporary touches that compliment and enhance the structure, but always within a strongly cohesive vision.

The modern architecture that draws me often exhibits traditional references in form, proportion or materials. And I feel the architecture of past centuries transcending time, with fundamentals of proportion and balance resonating within one’s very core.

When enjoying the precision of line and form exhibited by an exquisite lamp; or feeling the harmony of perfectly balanced colors and tones within an interior; or being absorbed by the mathematical majesty of the Pantheon, I believe great design is visceral and precise. Like perfect pitch; when it’s perfect, there’s no denying it.

Design is also about function. Interior design must address the necessities of function whilst striving for beauty in form. This balance will depend on the location, its function, physical concerns; and ultimately the clients’ needs and desires.

Design has been my life’s work and my passion. I have an honor’s degree in Graphic Design (Canterbury, England, 1988). I have worked as a Graphic Designer, a Product Designer and as an Interior designer. I previously ran my own business designing and manufacturing minimalist, contemporary products for the interiors industry. Prior to that, I owned and ran a gallery in San Francisco. I have sculptural pieces in private collections in London, New York, San Francisco, Los Angeles and Japan.

Ruth lives happily with her husband, nestled amongst the redwoods in beautiful Marin County, California.
